If your kid loves airplanes as much as ours does, LEGO airplane sets are some of the most fun toys you can get. Our son Jax has built quite a few of them, and we've put together this ranked list based on how much he actually plays with each one.
1. LEGO City Airport with Airplane (60502)
This is Jax's absolute favorite. It's not just an airplane — it's a full airport experience. The set comes with a jetway, a waiting area, and tons of minifigures. Jax loves walking the passengers through the terminal, down the jetway, and onto the plane. It really captures the excitement of going to the airport. Even better, it's designed to be compatible with the Passenger Airplane set (60367), so you can combine them for the ultimate airport setup.
2. LEGO City Passenger Airplane (60367)
This set has the largest airplane of any LEGO City set we've tried. It comes with stairs for boarding, a passenger bus, a catering truck, and a luggage truck — everything you'd see at a real airport. Plus, it includes 9 play-inspiring minifigures that keep Jax busy creating all kinds of travel stories. If you already have the Airport set (60502), these two together make an incredible airport world.
3. LEGO City Coast Guard Helicopter (60503)
This is a really impressive build — the helicopter is very large and looks great on display. It's a Coast Guard rescue helicopter with a shark and a rescue pod, which makes for exciting rescue missions. It's a bit different from the commercial aviation sets, but Jax loves the size and the rescue play scenarios.
4. LEGO City Fire Plane (60217)
This classic fire rescue plane has 363 pieces and makes for a really satisfying build. The plane is a sturdy, bright red water-dropping aircraft with spinning propellers. It's great for kids who love both airplanes and firefighting adventures.
5. LEGO City Emergency Air Ambulance (60465)
A rescue airplane for younger builders — this set is recommended for ages 6 and up, making it a great entry point. It's a fun pretend-play set with hero minifigures and a compact airplane that's easy to swoosh around. Not as detailed as the bigger sets, but great for kids who are just getting into LEGO.
6. LEGO City Airplane, Service Truck & Hovercraft Remix (60505)
This is a mix-and-match set where you can build different vehicles from the same pieces, including an airplane, a service truck, and a hovercraft. It's a creative concept that encourages kids to experiment, though none of the individual builds are as impressive as the dedicated airplane sets above.
7. LEGO City Passenger Jet (60492)
This small passenger jet has only 118 pieces and is designed for ages 4+, which makes it great for very young builders. However, the plane is very similar to the one included in the Airport set (60502), so if you already have that set, this one isn't really worth the price. Get this only if your little one is too young for the bigger sets.
8. LEGO City Fire Rescue Helicopter (60411)
This is a small, simple helicopter with just 85 pieces, designed for ages 5+. It comes with a firefighter minifigure and is a quick, easy build. It's a good stocking stuffer or a first LEGO set for a younger kid, but don't expect the detail or play value of the larger sets on this list.
Our Recommendation
If you can only pick one, go with the Airport with Airplane (60502) — it gives you the most complete airport experience. If your budget allows two sets, add the Passenger Airplane (60367) for the ultimate combo. And if you're shopping for a younger builder (ages 4-5), the Passenger Jet (60492) is the right starting point.
