If your kid loves airplanes as much as ours does, LEGO airplane sets are some of the most fun toys you can get. Our son Jax has built quite a few of them, and here is his ranked list.
1. LEGO City Airport with Airplane (60502)
This is Jax's absolute favorite. It's not just an airplane — it's a full airport experience. The set comes with a jetway, a waiting area, and tons of minifigures. Jax loves walking the passengers through the terminal, down the jetway, and onto the plane. It really captures the excitement of going to the airport. Even better, it's designed to be compatible with the Passenger Airplane set (60367), the #2 on this list, so you can combine them for the ultimate airport setup. In the photo, the large plane near Jax is the Passenger Airplane (60367) and it is perfectly compatible with the jetway in this set. The two sets together make an incredible airport world.
2. LEGO City Passenger Airplane (60367)
This is the large plane Jax is holding in the photo above! This set has the largest airplane of any LEGO City set we've tried. It comes with stairs for boarding, a passenger bus, a catering truck, and a luggage truck — everything you'd see at a real airport. It comes with 9 minifigures, and Jax likes making up travel stories with them. If you already have the Airport set (60502), these two together make an incredible airport world.
3. LEGO City Coast Guard Helicopter (60503)
This is a really impressive build — the helicopter is very large and looks great on display. It's a Coast Guard rescue helicopter with a shark and a rescue pod, which makes for exciting rescue missions. It's a bit different from the commercial aviation sets, but Jax loves the size and the rescue play scenarios.
4. LEGO City Passenger Jet (60492)
We never bought this one, but Jax still ranks it fairly high — he's seen it at the store and really wants it. That said, at $29.99 (at the time of this writing) for only 118 pieces, it's not a great deal. The airplane is actually shorter than the one included in the Airport set (60502), the #1 on this list. It's designed for ages 4+, which makes it great for very young builders, but if your kid is old enough for the bigger sets, skip this one and go straight for #1 — you get a bigger plane plus the whole airport for a much better value.
5. LEGO City Fire Rescue Plane (60413)
Jax built this one pretty quickly. It's a fire rescue plane with 3 minifigures — he mostly uses it for rescue missions with the Coast Guard helicopter. The plane is sturdy and has held up well.
6. LEGO City Fire Rescue Helicopter (60411)
A small helicopter — just 85 pieces, so Jax built it in about 10 minutes. He plays with it less than the bigger sets, but it was a good early build when he was just getting into LEGO. Would work well as a first set for a younger kid.
7. LEGO City Airplane, Service Truck & Hovercraft Remix (60505)
This 990-piece set comes with three models — a medical aircraft, a coast guard hovercraft, and a service truck with a cherry picker arm. The airplane itself is great and Jax really likes it. However, the "Remix" concept — where each model is built from three modular sections that you can swap between vehicles — didn't click with Jax. He prefers building a complete model and playing with it as-is rather than mixing parts between vehicles. If your kid enjoys experimenting and creating custom builds, the remix feature could be a hit. But if they're more of a "build it and play with it" kid like Jax, you might want to stick with the traditional sets higher on this list.
8. LEGO City Emergency Air Ambulance (60465)
Jax doesn't have this one yet, but he's asked about it. It's a rescue airplane for ages 6+ — smaller and simpler than the sets above, but it looks like a fun build.
Our Recommendation
If you can only pick one, go with the Airport with Airplane (60502) — it gives you the most complete airport experience. If your budget allows two sets, add the Passenger Airplane (60367) for the ultimate combo. And if you're shopping for a younger builder (ages 4-5), the Passenger Jet (60492) is the right starting point.
