Jax's model airplane collection started with a single Daron Hawaiian Airlines plane we picked up at the airport. Now he has a whole shelf full of them. Here's what we've learned along the way.

What Are Model Airplanes?

Model airplanes are small copies of real planes — metal (diecast), plastic, or wood. Some fit in your hand, others are as long as your arm.

Types of Models

Diecast Models

These are the ones Jax collects. They come pre-built and painted to match the real airplane. Most come in different scales:

  • 1:400 scale — About 4 inches long. Great for collecting lots of airlines!
  • 1:200 scale — About 8 inches long. More detail, but takes more shelf space.
  • 1:100 scale — Really big and detailed, but expensive.

Snap-Together Kits

These are plastic models you put together yourself — no glue needed! They're fun to build and you can learn about different parts of the airplane while assembling them.

Display Models

These come fully built on a stand. They look great on a bookshelf or desk and often have very realistic details.

Tips for New Collectors

Start with Airlines You Know

Jax started with airlines he'd actually flown on — Delta, Hawaiian, Alaska. Having a real memory attached to each model makes the collection more fun for him.

Pick a Scale

Stick to one scale so all your models look good together. 1:400 is the most popular because the models are affordable and don't take up too much room.

Take Care of Your Models

Keep them on a shelf away from direct sunlight (the colors can fade!). Dust them gently with a soft brush.

Learn as You Collect

Every time Jax gets a new model, he wants to know where the airline is from and what kind of plane it is. That's actually how this website started.

Where to Find Models

We've found ours at airport gift shops, toy stores, and Amazon. Every airline page on this site has a "Collect Model" link that goes straight to Amazon.
